Local teacher, local hero!

To the editor:

On Feb. 8, 2023, Mrs. Emily Doyle-Shubert took her first grade class on a field trip from Petrova Elementary to visit the Ice Palace.

Looking at the pictures she sent to us parents, all the kids were having a great time! That is, until my daughter, Charlotte, had put a piece of ice in her mouth to suck on. Soon after, it had slid down her throat and became logged there. Unable to breathe, she luckily ran straight to Mrs. Shubert and did her best to motion at her throat in an attempt to let her know that she could not breathe.

Without hesitation, Mrs. Shubert immediately began performing back blows on her in an attempt to dislodge the ice from her throat. When this proved unsuccessful, she performed the Heimlich maneuver on Charlotte, eventually dislodging the ice.

As you can imagine, this was a very emotional moment for everybody involved. And that especially showed when Mrs. Shubert held Charlotte as they cried tears of fear/joy together. She then spent the remainder of the trip by Charlotte’s side making sure she was OK before finally heading back to the school and having her checked out by the nurse.

Words can’t convey how appreciative we all are for Mrs. Schubert’s quick action that did indeed save Charlotte’s life. Thank you! From the bottom of everybody’s heart that knows and loves Charlotte, thank you!
