Wilmington deserves democracy

To the editor:

I request that the Wilmington Town Council member appointed on Aug. 18 take a step to unify our community and honorably resign. This action will give Wilmington’s elected officials an opportunity to devise a clear, commonly understood and democratic process to allow the people of Wilmington to choose the fifth member of their town’s government.

The fifth member of our town council may be in office for more than 450 days. During this time major decisions will be made — decisions that will impact Wilmington for many years to come.

Members of our community, including the recently appointed board member, must have the opportunity to step forward and offer to serve on our town council. All Wilmington voters must be given the opportunity to express their preference for their newest local leader.

I ask our town council to hold a special meeting to devise a democratic process to allow the people of Wilmington to choose the fifth member of their municipal government. The people of Wilmington deserve a fair, appropriate, transparent and respectful process — nothing less. One option our town council should consider as it seeks to devise a democratic method through which the people of Wilmington will choose their fifth town council member in a formal or advisory write-in balloting process conducted on Election Day (Nov. 8).

Wilmington deserves democracy.

Sincerely,

Brigette E. Levitt
