‘The Woods’ creates conversation

To the editor:

During the post-show hangout at the opening of Jahna Ferron-Smith’s “The Woods” at Pendragon Theatre, I heard many stories from attendees reflecting on how race, class and power play into one’s experience of “the great outdoors.” The play (which is largely funny, insightful and whip-smart) makes behind-closed-doors conversations visible, showing through layered and detailed storytelling how white supremacy and patriarchy influence the way members of marginalized communities experience nature. It’s such a fitting story to tell here in the Adirondacks, and it’s already creating necessary conversation and reflection. Though Ferron-Smith’s arguments may push buttons, I think they’re just the buttons that can enact change. If you saw “The Woods” for yourself this past weekend, let me know what it made you think.
