Fame or fun

To the editor:

In 1984 the National Flat Water Canoe and Kayak Championships were hosted by the Village of Saranac Lake and the American Canoe Association. These team trials determined members of the World Cup Team to be held that year in Shannon, Ireland. Our own, kyak superstar, Dr. George Cook, competed in Saranac Lake that year and won a spot on the World Cup Team.

Saranac Lake was awarded this prestigious race due to its reputation and proficiency in running water competitions for fun or fame. This race was yet another way for small budgets to generate world wide publicity.

The success of the Willard Hanmer Guideboat and Canoe race held this past July is an example of the community spirit that can, and should again, generate attention to this area.

As one enthusiastic competitor said, “Saranac Lake can be the paddling capital of the world.” Not sure about the world, but for fun or fame, it is the epicenter of Adirondack aquatic activities. See you on the water.
