From masks to mittens

To the editor:

I moved to Saranac Lake in 2003 and never looked back. It was the best place ever to raise two sons and build a network of deep friendships. I love this decidedly different place to live.

Nothing endears Saranac Lake to me more than the amazing people who live here. They rally when the call goes out. I saw that with the Tri-Lakes Community Makers’ heroic effort to quickly supply quality, handmade masks to local health care and essential workers.

In July, I had the idea to wrangle up a group of community knitters and crocheters to make hats, scarves and mittens for the school children in the Saranac Lake Central School District. Shortly after that, a group from Lake Placid joined our effort to make winter wear for the Lake Placid Elementary School. The idea was to keep the school children warm enough to stay outside longer. No child should be cold in our community, and to make sure of that, we made a total of 151 hats, 108 pairs of mittens and 106 scarves. I am grateful to those who stepped up. They should be recognized. Thank you, my friends!
