Background

Over the course of the past two to three months, a process has been undertaken by the mayor of Lake Placid, Craig Randall, to redesign the portion of New York State Route 86, known as Main Street, Lake Placid. The mayor has appointed members of the community forming a task force for this purpose.

The redesign of Main Street is being piggybacked onto a key infrastructure upgrade the village is doing that will replace the water main, stormwater drains and mitigate runoff into Mirror Lake while keeping road salt from getting into the lake.

Proposed plan

The draft redesign of Main Street has massive changes to a fully functional three-way intersection at the base of Saranac Avenue, Main Street and Mirror Lake Drive. This critical intersection on a typical day has major traffic flows, while also providing a critical loading zone large enough to accommodate deliveries to the businesses.

Conclusion and actions requested

New York State Department of Transportation has the right of way, which the village seeks to make changes upon.

The meetings of the task force were not published into local newspapers, nor were stakeholders given proper opportunity for their input. Local media has observed and written about this.

There are many who will be significantly impacted by proposed radical restructuring of a critical intersection. We therefore ask the NYSDOT to initiate a public review and receive input on the proposed intersection redesign.
