WIRD radio owner Don Nardiello questions Essex County Supervisors Bob Purdy and B. J. Cook about the fundraising shortfalls that are delaying a decision on staging the FISU (Federation International Sports University games). June 1 was set as a deadline on whether to go ahead with the games. [The FISU games were held in 1972, very successful; hundreds of athletes from about 20 countries. The first time the games were held in the United States.]

“The Essex County Board of Supervisors finally voted this week to return a little over $64,000 to the operating budget of North Country Community College.

“Voting in a roll call vote Monday in Elizabethtown, the supervisors agreed in a budget note for $64,617 from the State Bank of Albany. An equal amount will be coming from the Franklin County Board of Legislators.”

Placid teachers given tenure

“Six teachers in the Lake Placid Central School system received tenure last evening after some discussion of the merit of the tenure system.

Tenure will be granted to the Lake Placid teachers before May 9 when the new ruling becomes effective. Those granted tenure include Laura Edmonds, Principal of the Elementary School, Harold Levine, Frank Schissler, Mary Hanrahan, Judith Borzilleri, Dorothea Pratt and Raymond Durkee.”

Wilmington planning considered

“Matthew Delaney, Director of the Lake George-Lake Champlain Regional Planning Board presented an outline for future planning to the residents of Wilmington.

“One-tenth of the population of the Town of Wilmington — a little over 70 persons — sat in their small wooden town hall Tuesday to hear Mr. Delaney.

“It was a meeting characterized by curiosity, interest, some critical questions, some of the old fears against zoning and some misunderstanding occasionally between Mr. Delaney and the residents.

“But it was, not a hostile meeting. The general feeling, made explicit several times in questions and comments was that Wilmington certainly did not want anyone else to do planning for them.

“Delaney told Wilmington residents to think of planning as ‘land use control.'”
