No big news is good news

The Enterprise, July 20, 1960

Birthdays of beautiful Winter Williams, 2-year-old daughter of Johnny and Isabel Williams, Sally Spadaro and Howard Riley.

That is the big news.

Now, 65 years ago, this is what the Enterprise had to say in stories and advertisements.

Ski bids At Big Tupper

“A special meeting of the Town Board was held Monday afternoon for the purpose of acting on the recommendation of the Town Engineer in regard to the bids on the Big Tupper Ski Development.

“It was the recommendation that the bid of the Bureau Brothers, Newcomb, for $75,156.85 on the Road and Parking Lot be rejected and re-advertised. The town will also re-advertise on the chairlift contract. There were no bids on the chairlift contract at the first opening of bids.

“The only change in the specifications is in the Road and Parking Lot area contract which has been changed to state that a corduroy road is to be built across the swamp instead of digging out the muck as stated in the first bid.

“The Board accepted the bids of Upstate Logging Company on Contracts 2 and 3, clearing and grading of the T-Bar Chairlift areas. The contracts were for $22,975.00 and $38,800. The bill for the Hall Ski Life Company of Syracuse for installation of the T-Bar life was accepted by the Board for $49,900.

“Supervisor Jack Valliancourt was given authority to make formal application to the village for electrical power at the development amounting to 500 horsepower and the Board discussed preliminary plans on the proposed ski lodge.”

Fun in the Adirondacks

“At a meeting over the weekend at the Camp of Harold Fortune on Lake Placid, the members of the Adirondack Attractions Association agreed to continue its cooperative advertising program with the chambers of commerce and other civic publicity groups for the 1961 season.

“The 1960 campaign concluded June 22. It had been headed up by Rod Bucklin and included advertisements placed beneath a cooperative ‘Fun in the Adirondacks’ banner which was carried by many major papers and magazines. The campaign also included exhibition booths at two sports shows, one in New York City and the other in Cleveland.

“The Association president, Philip Baber, head of the AuSable Chasm attraction, reported that the 1960 campaign had been highly successful with thousands of replies received.”
