Thank you to Historic Saranac Lake for preserving the story of our beautiful village in the Adirondacks.

That story, as we all know, centers on the health industry; more specifically Saranac Lake became known as the best place in the world to cure for tuberculosis when Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau founded the first tuberculosis sanitarium in the United States.

HSL is restoring and creating a museum focused on the TB history in Dr. Trudeau’s former home at the corner of Main and Church in Saranac Lake.

Perhaps the following the story, from the Enterprise archives in the Adirondack Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library, will give readers a better understanding of the important work that was being carried out at Trudeau.

“The thirty-fourth annual session of the Trudeau School of Tuberculosis conducted in Saranac Lake during the past four weeks will conclude tomorrow.

“The school this year had a total of 33 registrations, the largest since the sessions were inaugurated. The physicians were represented from the United States, Canada and many foreign countries.

“The course which opened on September 13th was for graduates in medicine who wished to prepare themselves for sanatorium or public health service, for physicians desiring a refresher course in tuberculosis and for fourth year undergraduate medical students.

“The school was under the direction of Dr. Edward N. Packard, director of Trudeau sanatorium. Instructors included staff members from local hospitals and sanatoria as well as prominent physicians from many sections of the country.

“A highlight of the four-week period was the celebration last Tuesday of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, pioneer in the field of tuberculosis treatment. Several of the visiting doctors participated in the program held at Trudeau.

“Starting next week a supplemental course of instruction will be given at the Bellevue hospital in New York for those who wish additional training. Faculty members of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons will instruct.

Fish and Game Club raises dues

“A resolution to increase the 1949 dues to three dollars was approved last night by members of the Saranac Lake Fish and Game club at their regular meeting in the club house on the Bloomingdale road.

“The approval came after a lengthy discussion on the subject. The two dollar increase, officers stated, would remain until the club house mortgage had been paid off. A vote on the resolution will be taken at the next meeting.

“The club also went on record as in favor of having the area fish and game clubs, through the Franklin County Federation sponsor an exhibit next year at the county fair. The request was made by Carl Prue, assistant district game protector from Malone.”
