Enterprise sports stories — 1974

Joe Gladd and Keefe Riley, Saranac Lake Redskins, 1973

Still unfolding the great folder of history on loan to me from native Saranac Laker Marilee Dupree — not only the Saturday Evening Post magazine from 1951 with the detailed story about Saranac Lake but a page from a 1974 sesquicentennial edition of the Enterprise written by the students of Saranac Lake High School.

By the way, the photo of the three beautiful high school students carried here last week blurred the name of the third young lady, who was none other than Naoma Stevens.

Also in the folder, an 1899 “Map of the Adirondack Wilderness” complied by S. R. Stoddard, Glens Falls, N.Y., is printed on sheer canvass — “Twenty first (revised) Edition.”

I’ll be taking the map over to Leifheit & Littlefield, Land Surveying at 54 Park St. in Tupper Lake, where they can copy the map for their business and maybe make a copy for me.

Owen Littlefield is my nephew, once removed. … See, I don’t know what to call him because his father, Kevin Littlefield, is really my nephew.

TRI-LAKES VARSITY ON THE ROAD — “Everyone is on the road tonight at the end of the Northern League and Mountain Valley league basketball season ends. The Saranac Lake Redskins travel to Norwood Norfolk for a re-match with the Flying N’s while the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks take a trip to Potsdam for their return match with the Sandstoners. Both Tri-Lakes teams have won their first meetings with tonight’s rivals. A win tonight for the Reds will keep them in sole possession of second place. Tonight’s battle with Potsdam is a must-win for the ’Jacks who are on the playoff border line. The Lake Placid Blue Bombers, who have had a disappointing season thus far, head towards Schroon Lake tonight. In their first encounter on the Bomber hardcourt last December, Schroon Lake handed the Bombers their fourth loss, 54-41.”

Rejoined at the stick

The back page of that Enterprise special edition carried a sports column “Athlete’s Feats” by p.j. I don’t know who p.j. is, but if some reader knows, please contact me.

Son-of-a-Gun, one of the lead stories in his column, started out about our oldest son, Keefe Michael Riley, a member of the Plattsburgh State hockey team.

“Keefe Riley, former left-winger on the Redskin hockey squad is playing on the Plattsburgh University hockey team.

“Joe Gladd, another former Redskin skater has transferred from Cowles Community College in Kansas and is also seeing action with the PSUC icemen.

“The Plattsburgh-Press Republican in separate stories over the weekend noted: ‘The three power play goals by Elmira overshadowed a sterling show by PSUC freshman Keefe Riley who scored the Cards’ only two goals, both times with the locals skating shorthanded.'” (For readers who are not hockey fans — shorthanded means your team has a player in the penalty box.)

Then another story …

“Larry Wilbur and Keefe Riley, two welcomed additions to the PSUC Fieldhouse fraternity, helped pull Plattsburgh State out of a two-game tailspin Saturday night as the Cards snapped back to beat the Norwich B team 3 to 1. Wilbur had 58 saves in two games. Riley, a freshman transfer from Canton, assisted on the Cards’ go-ahead goal by Paul Durant at 8:35 of the third period and three minutes later, Riley added the insurance goal.”

So Keefe and Joe, the former Saranac Lake High School pals, were together again at Plattsburgh State. Joe, a friend of the family, is a nice guy with a great personality. Keefe scored many a shorthanded goal with SLHS. Players have to stay in their lane, left-wing was Keefe’s position … unless the team is down a man, then the entire rink becomes your lane and that always cut Keefe loose from the pack.

Keefe, with another member of the PSUC team, Tom Jennings, took a semester off at the end of their junior year and went to Europe to try out for the Holland National Team. They didn’t make the cut but had a great trip and hitchhiked all over Europe. They returned and graduated from Plattsburgh State.

Girls varsity loses — JV’s win

I wish more first names were used in the sports stories. Anyway, here is the 1974 Girls Redskin Varsity basketball roster; the “Lady Reds” stars were Bomyea, Hall, Homburger, Howard and Woodward.

“FT. COVINGTON — The Saranac Lake Redskin girls varsity basketball team was tagged with its second loss in as many starts yesterday when they dropped a 43-29 decision to the Salmon River Shamrocks.

“Coach Bryan Bissonette had high praise for the play of Debbie Hall who scored eight points for the Reds and consistently pulled down rebounds and played a good defensive game.”

The JV team roster listed Collins, Cruickshank, Parsons, Ratelle and Daniels.

“The Red and White JV’s shook off the Shamrocks in the second quarter then put the game out of reach in the second half out-scoring the hosts 23-8. Kathy Ratelle played an outstanding game for the Redskins both offensively and defensively scoring 22 points from the field. She made several key defensive plays including five steals which converted to Redskin scores.

“Teammate Brenda Cruickskank played her best game to date contributing eight points and several fine defensive plays under the boards.

“Other scorers were Betty Collins with four, Nancy Parsons, three and Nora Daniels one. The entire squad saw action in the second half with several first year players showing promise including Kathy Reynolds, Lydia William, Mary Nason and Nora Daniels.”
