Diamond jubilee Winter Carnival — 1972

There was an exceptional parade, exceptional floats and exceptional matching units for the 1972 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Unfortunately, I don’t have a 1972 program.

What I do have is a page of photos, and the back of that page has a number of sports stories.

The Parent-Teacher Association sponsored the elementary school skating races; that year there were 214 entries in grades 1 to 6.

This column will be more photos than text. I get so much feedback, however, when I publish names of kids that participated in events back then, kids now in their 60s.

Following are the skating race winners. This story is going to cause trouble in my family because our son Kasey was a winner in Grade 4 … but apparently not his twin brother Kean. OK, Kean, only the top three places are listed, so you probably came in fourth.

“The elementary school skating races, called the PTA sponsored races which are really set up and run by only the teachers had the usual large turnout at the municipal rink Friday afternoon.

“The races started on time and moved quickly through the heats. Depending on the number of children in each grade registered to race, 2 or 3 heats had to be run off before the finals.

“In grade 1, 26 boys and 10 girls raced; in grade 2, there were 31 boys and 17 girls; in grade 3 there were 27 boys and 15 girls; grade 4 had 21 boys and 17 girls; grade 5 had 18 boys and 15 girls and grade 6 entered 12 boys and 7 girls.

“Winners were: Grade 1 – Boys, Richard Merrit, Richard Yorkey and Thomas Hall; girls, Amber Fletcher, Whitney Walsh and Terry Hart.

“Grade 2: Boys, Tedford Bach, Richard Battistoni and Thomas Callahan; Girls, Mary Beth Gallagher, Mary Agnes Pelletieri and Cathleen Coombs. [Well, I’ll tell you, Aggie Pelletieri Reilly, you haven’t slowed down since!]

“Grade 3: Boys, Ted Cantwell, Bradley Dewey and Phillip Bomyea; Girls, Laurie Sturgeon, Beth Hesseltine and Cathy Taylor.

“Grade 4; Boys, Andre Brosseau, Kasey Riley and David Bach; Girls, Terry Kilner, Jennifer Kilfoyle and Mary Stiles.

“Grade 5; Boys, T. J. Perras, Kurt Provost and Danny Capone; Girls, Sally Homburger, Renee Reyell and Robin Delosh.

“Grade 6; Boys, Tod Fobare, Paul Harvey and David Scollins; Girls, Lynn LaPlante, Ellen Peer and Bernadette McGill.

“Hundreds of parents and visitors tuned out to watch the 214 children vie for the gold, silver and bronze.”

PSC beats Hudson Valley

“TROY — Paul Smith’s Bobcats traveled down here Friday night to do battle with the Vikings of Hudson Valley and ran their game total to 16 games at the expense of their hosts.

“The Bobcats put together a strong defensive effort, holding the Hudson valet quintet to a mere 19 field goals. Again the key to the win, as in all prior Bobcat victories, was the aggressive harassment on defense which caused many Viking turnovers.

“The Bobcats set the pace with the opening tap, and the game was controlled from that point on, with the Bobcats on top of the situation at first-half’s end, 31-26.

“The excellent play of Rich Fingerlin, 6-foot-two-inch guard from Linden, N.J., in the first half was a major factor in the lead.”

Squirts, Pee Wees win

“The Hockey Associations carnival weekend activities were led off Friday afternoon with a match between the Police Protective Association and Moreau Fuel. After much fierce combat, and despite many opportunities to score, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

“Brasher Falls came to town Saturday morning with its Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam teams. Saranac Lake’s Squirts won the game, taking Brasher quite handily, 5-1.

“Superior skating and good passing and hard shooting carried the Saranac Lake Pee Wee’s to an 11-0 romp over Brasher.

“Brasher’s Bantams made up for the two earlier losses and defeated the Saranac Lake team 4-1.”

Apology

In last week’s column in announcing the 1971 Carnival King “Chuck” Pandolph and Queen Norma Allen — Ms. Allen’s name was misspelled throughout the column as Norman.

I have 10 or 20 excuses why that happened but none of them make any sense. My feeble attempt to blame the mistake on someone or something other than me is this: after mentioning Norman Rockwell in the same column my ancient computer changed Norma to Norman. No good, eh?

So with apologizes to Queen Norma Allen in Heaven and her family, let us remember this: Her community involvement with her work as a member of the Women’s Civic Chamber, the Catholic Daughters, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Ladies of the Moose.
