Saranac Lake village incorporated!
(Enterprise centennial edition, May 1992)
The end of 2022 marks the 130-year anniversary of the incorporation of the village of Saranac Lake.
But 1992 was also a big year for New York state, and that is one reason Gov. Mario Cuomo came to the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake — to celebrate the 1892 creation of the Adirondack Park. Later, in 1894, the Forever Wild clause was added to the state Constitution, which prohibited timber cutting or the sale or leasing of state land.
The title of president of the village was bestowed on the first leaders of the village, with the title changed to mayor in 1929.
It is so fitting that the first president was Dr. Edward L. Trudeau, followed by Milo B. Miller, John C. Russell, Wallace Murray, M. Dwyer, Oatman A. Covill, John Russell again, Alfred L. Donaldson, George F. W. Duryee, John Harding and Isaiah Vosburgh who served three separate terms.
Also Clifton D. Havens, John C. Morgan, Eddy Whitby, Charles L. Dickert, Daniel Foster and Fred C. Conrad.
It appears that Dr. Trudeau accepted the honor as serving as president but resigned after one year, as did others.
So, in the first 36 years, there were 20 presidents serving short terms, but as the title changed to mayor and the terms of office became longer, there were only 15 mayors in the next 58 years. I was the 10th mayor elected in 1964.
The Enterprise centennial tabloid edition was 32 pages, loaded with stories and advertising … following is a glimpse of the activities scheduled for a week-long centennial celebration.
The Adirondack singers opened the week with a concert at St. Bernard’s Church; Saranac Lake’s unique history was dramatized in a series of readings at the Pendragon Theatre; The U.S. Postal Service was offering a one-day only Centennial postal cancellation; the Saranac Lake High school stage band and choir was giving a concert at the Town Hall; the Hotel Saranac ballroom was transformed into a 1940s-style nightclub featuring jazz bands, magicians, singers and solo musicians. The week concluded with fireworks over Lake Flower.
During the week there were many storefronts featuring a photographic history of Saranac Lake and a special citizens’ photo show at the Cantwell Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library.
