Winter Carnival parade in December?

No identification for the guys posing with their Christmas baskets for the needy Knights of Columbus except — third from left is my cousin Howard McKillip, manager of the A&P, and the last man on the right is Jack Fogarty’s Dad, John Fogarty, Chairman of the Village Democratic Committee. Notice the little boy standing in the center. (Photo Courtesy of the Adirondack Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library — 85.265 - 490 kb)

Thanks to the chief of my research team, Michele Tucker, curator of the Adirondack Room of the Saranac Lake Free Library, I have the following in my possession. Here is the lead story on page three of a copy of this 74-year-old Enterprise. (Just wait until Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee Chairman Jeff Branch reads this!)

“With the coming of snow to Saranac Lake the Carnival Committee decided against postponing the annual event and this morning released the schedule of events for this year’s week of sports.

“The Carnival will open December 28th with a parade of floats and units entered by various fraternal organizations of the village.

“Under the sponsorship of the Lions Club, the parade will start at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning from the veteran’s Home on Broadway, come down Broadway and Main streets and continue to Prescott Park where the judging of floats will take place.

“The high school (I marched in the parade that year as a member of the high school band) and municipal bands will play marching music for the parade and it is planned that one band shall be spaced about one-third of the way down the line; the second band two-thirds of the way down so that groups both before and after may have benefit of the music.

“In the evening there will be ski movies with a running commentary by Otto Schniebs. The noted skier will also speak on the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. (St. Moritz held the second Olympic Games in 1928; Lake Placid held the games in 1932 and 1980; and Innsbruck, Austria in 1956 and 1976, making these three villages the only ones to host the Olympic Winter Games twice.) “December 29 and 30 will feature a basketball game and a sled derby.

“The 31st, Friday, will be high school day with a tri-school ski meet between Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake high schools.

“January 1st and 2nd will have skating races on the Lake Flower rink. On Sunday afternoon there will be ski races on the Mt. Pisgah slopes.

“The Carnival Committee last night discussed plans to have a Sportsman’s Show from January 3 to 7, and hope to have the Fish and Game Club take charge of the event.

“The Carnival will end on Saturday, January 8, with the crowning of the King and Queen of Winter who will reign over the Carnival Ball to be held during evening at the Hotel Saranac.”

Christmas celebrations galore

“The Kiwassa Rebekah Lodge held its annual Christmas meeting and party at the IOOF Hall on Main Street. Noble Grand, Mae Ward conducted the business meeting before the party.

“There was a large Christmas Tree, tables circled around the tree where gifts were exchanged and refreshments served.

Those events were hosted by Mrs. Ella Bomyea, Mrs. Ann Culver, Mrs. Mary Mace and Miss Myrtle Haselton.”

Bloomingdale church party

“The Christmas service of the Methodist Church was held Sunday.

“The choir led of with many hymns led by Mrs. John L. Buttolph, with Mrs. Harry Weston as organists. The choir began with ‘Mary’s Slumber Song.’ followed by ‘Come to My Heart, Dear Jesus.’

“The sermon was given by Edwin H. Hughes, Jr. On Friday there was candle-light service in the sanctuary with singing by the Senior and Junior choirs.”

Hanukkah program at Jewish center

“The annual program to mark, Hanukkah, better known as ‘Festival of Lights,’ will take place at 4 o’clock Sunday at the Jewish Community Center on Church Street.

“The holiday commemorates the victory over the Maccabees over the Greek Army, led by Antichocus, in the year 167 B.C. It exemplifies the freedom of religion since the Greeks were driven from Jerusalem as the result of the decisive Battle of Emmaus and the lights were re-kindled in the temples.

“Rabbi Alfred Kahn will deliver the address and children will give a play directed by Mrs. Kahn.

“Food boxes will be delivered to bed patients in the village. Those in charge were Mrs. Sol Drutz, Mrs. Jerome Jerome, Mrs. Joseph Jacobsen and Mrs. Joseph Goldstein.”

Bobrun on Pisgah?

“Joseph Munn, Chairman of the Pisgah Ski Commission submitted a routine report of the work accomplished on the mountain to village trustees at a meeting Monday night.

“Mr. Munn’s report included several recommendations, principally in relation to the Pisgah Run now under construction. He argued for more shaping and building of the run, speaking of the need for rounding the curves on the one-man bobrun.

“At present men of the village highway department are working on the ski development. These, it was pointed out, will have to be taken off the mountain work to follow their regular schedule on the first heavy snowfall.

“A plea that other village workers be sent to work on the run was discussed but no action was taken because no other department would spare employees from the work in which they are presently engaged.”

(I am surprised that the reporter doesn’t identify the board members who responded. Tony Anderson was Mayor and Trustees were Irving Edelberg, Donald V. Dupree, Carl Smith and Willis B. Currier.)
