Training for second moon landing

My personal editor, Brittany Proulx, makes my column look good every week.

She is a digital guru reducing this historic edition of the Enterprise to column size.

Nothing changes much — look at the headline prompted by President Nixon’s Vice President Spiro Agnew. He resigned after pleading guilty to a single felony charge of tax evasion in satisfaction of numerous other charges.

So, I will let the Enterprise copy speak for itself, but there was other local news in November 1969… many of those named in this case are still around, thus the name changes … Page one …

Jury trial

“The trial of Pete Moss, 24, of Saranac Lake, charged with criminally selling a dangerous drug, marijuana, was adjourned Thursday night at 5:10 p.m., and will reconvene today at 10 a.m.

“The case is being heard before County Judge Ellsworth N. Lawrence of Malone. District Attorney Owens Grogan of Malone is representing the people in the case and Malone attorney Joseph Poissant of the law firm of Poissant and Twiss represents the defendant.

“Moss is accused of selling marijuana sometime in July to Harvey Wallbanger, 20, of Saranac Lake.

“District Attorney Grogan called Wallbanger as his first witness Thursday and he was on the stand from 4 p.m. until court adjourned.

“Wallbanger testified that he had purchased marijuana from Moss in July of 1968 in the Village of Saranac Lake and that he paid $5 for the purchase.

“He further testified that he and Moss smoked part of the marijuana in a cemetery in Saranac Lake but that later he threw away the remainder of his purchase because he was ‘scared’. He also testified that he had smoked marijuana on two other occasions with the defendant.

“Attorney Poissant repeatedly challenged Wallbanger’s testimony on charges that Wallbanger not only was not an expert on the identification of marijuana but that he was unable to pinpoint the date of the alleged purchase other than sometime in July of 1968.

“Selection of the jury began Wednesday and was not completed until about noon on Thursday. It was necessary to send out a call shortly after noon on Wednesday for 60 additional jurors because of the large number from the original panel 0f 60 who were excused by the court for personal reasons or who under examination by the attorneys, were rejected or challenged.”

Drug charges

“The last three, of eleven students arrested in Saranac Lake on Monday on drug charges, were released from the Franklin County jail last night. They are Fred Nerks, 18, of Bayside; Harry Hawk, 19, of Carle Place, both attending a local college; and Joe Schmoe, 19, of Kew Gardens, who attends City College in New York.

“The arraignment of all eleven was adjourned on Monday to give the defendants time to obtain counsel and will be continued at 7 o’clock this evening.”

4-H club elects new officers

“At the second Lake Clear 4-H meeting this year, the following officers were elected; George Carly, president; Bill Elliott, vice president; Ronnie Stringer, secretary and Jane Tebo, treasurer.

“The recreation leaders are Jerry Fletcher and Laura Amell; Craig Donaldson, refreshment chairman; [this one doesn’t surprise me – I know Craig very well – he is Harrietstown Highway Superintendent and he knows how to down the refreshments]; Eloise Carly is news reporter.

“There were 17 members at the meeting. After refreshments were served [guess by who, er, whom?] and the business meeting concluded, there was a scavenger hunt.”

There was also news, 1905

“Jacob Hehr, the missing Malone baker, was found last Friday on Mount Immortelle, near Lake Titus. He had evidently shot himself accidentally. Beside him was a deer which he had shot and dressed.” [Since there are no quotes from Mr. Hehr as to what happened, he apparently was found deceased.]

“R.C. Wilson, proprietor of the Jack Pond House, a well known resort for sportsmen, spent several days at the Arlington [the Potter Block at the corner of Broadway and Bloomingdale Avenue] this week. He was accompanied by his family. He was one of those who are naturally qualified by a genial nature to make all who come in contact with him become his friends.”

“S.S. Cook, who has conducted a blacksmith shop on Woodruff Street for some time has closed shop temporarily and gone to Moriah where he will be associated with his brother in the trucking business.

“His departure is greatly regretted by horsemen, for he is one of the cleverest men in his line of work who has ever worked in Saranac Lake.”
