Test your vehicle and traffic law IQ — 2026
In July 2025, I had the privilege of speaking to the Police Academy in Plattsburgh, where new police officers receive a 6-month training course before they return to their agency and begin their career of enforcement. At the end of my presentation, I gave the students a number of questions on vehicle and traffic law and traffic safety. The questions on this year’s “Safety on the Roads” column to test your knowledge of traffic law and traffic safety were all asked of the students in the academy and have all previously been part of the annual 20-question test, so there should be no excuse for not knowing the answers. The answers will be presented in next week’s column.

The answers will be the subject of next week’s article. All of the questions are taken from previous articles over the past six or seven years, so you should have done very well. If not, now is the time to review the NYS driver’s manual and take a “Smart Driver” course. Reading these weekly articles on VTL and traffic safety would also help. Most of us think we’re good drivers, yet we don’t know all the laws that govern how we drive. We are never too old to learn, so let’s keep learning.
