Image of the Week
This recently donated postcard shows the Wawbeek Hotel under the light of a full moon. The Wawbeek was located on Upper Saranac Lake, and the original hotel was only in operation from 1889 to 1913. It was a lavish operation and the high costs ultimately led to its closure. Fun fact about these moonlight cards: The images were taken in the daytime, but the postcards were hand-colored for printing. The nighttime scenes have simply been modified to appear as though they were taken under the glow of the moon. We have seen identical daytime and nighttime images on different postcards. Talk about getting more bang for your buck! (Photo provided — Historic Saranac Lake Collection, 2026.17.3. Gift of the St. Lawrence County Center for History & Culture)
