Give or don’t give to the GoFundMe

There are always GoFundMe campaigns happening, no matter the time of year. It is heartbreaking to see these appeals for funds, whether for medical, emergency or memorial causes. For those not in the know, GoFundMe is the online fundraising platform where anyone can set up a donation page for a specific cause.

Online, there will always be a few outliers commenting on whether the campaign’s recipient is truly worthy of the donation or judging the fund’s usage. I’m not sure when those same people forgot that they have choices when it comes to their money. No one is required to give anything, but some people feel obligated to voice their opinion with or without the donation.

GoFundMe is a for-profit organization that does not vet donation pages. There have been incidents of individuals setting up scam pages or even raising funds for others without permission. The corporation clearly states to report any suspicion of fraud. The GoFundMe website states, “the safest rule is to only donate to people you personally know and trust.”

The groups and people I know that have benefited from such fundraising do so only as a last resort. Most people don’t want to share their troubles with their neighbors or strangers. Sometimes it is necessary, whether for monetary funds or moral support. Even if you don’t want to or can’t donate, a person will appreciate any kind thoughts.

If donating through an online company makes you skeptical, but you still want to help, look for other ways to contribute such as community dinners or raffles. You could also give your gift directly to the individual or organization. I’ve found that dropping off a meal is always appreciated. It not only provides the family with a full belly but also is an opportunity to engage beyond social media or an online presence.

I’ve seen the generosity of our community. I see people lift up others and give their time to make sure friends and neighbors are safe. Keep in mind, when we give someone a meal, we have no control over how they choose to eat it.

Donating money never gives us the right to criticize how a person spends their present and future earnings. Be kind. I hope you are safe.
