A change of seasons at the Jay Covered Bridge

The Jay Covered Bridge is the perfect place for relazation and seasonal views. (Photo provided — Diane Chase)

One of our favorite places to go every season is the covered bridge in Jay.

The 175-foot-traffic-only bridge provides us with shelter from inclement weather. We can go for a quick walk while exploring the changes of season, or stay longer while observing the scenery from one of the openings within the bridge. Springtime brings us the swift-flowing waters of the East Branch of the AuSable River while summer allows for swimming and sunbathing on the flat rocks below. Now that it’s autumn, it is the perfect place to view the changing colors.

According to the New York State Covered Bridge Society, this bridge is one of only 32 covered bridges left in the state. Erected in 1857 by George Burt, this bridge is one of three Howe truss bridges left in New York and the only remaining one in the Adirondack Park. The Howe Truss was a patented bridge support system that Howe, a millwright from Massachusetts, developed to strengthen bridges and increase capacity. The bridge was completely restored and returned to its original site in 2006 and rededicated in 2007. Look for the informational displays at each entrance explaining the Howe truss structure and historical facts pertaining to the surrounding area.

There are also other activities to do at this historic destination. The town of Jay has a beautiful park with picnic benches facing the river and nearby public tennis courts. A paved path leads to a playground for the youngest members of the group.

We usually just stop to take the obligatory “leaf peeping” photos. I sometimes need reminding to slow down and appreciate the beautiful scenery. Stopping at the Jay Covered Bridge always gives me that opportunity to reflect and enjoy a 360 degree view. Enjoy the change of seasons!
