Gideon Eric Hawley

Gideon Eric Hawley, 78, of Lake Placid, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025. Born on July 5, 1947, in Albany, he was the son of the late Gideon and Ruth Hawley, previous owners of Interlaken Lodge, which was the summer home to figure skaters.

In Lake Placid, Gideon and his wife Mary Anne built a business together that remains active today. He used his sharp mind, strong business sense and love of mathematics to establish the solid foundations on which the company still successfully operates.

Gideon will be remembered for his good-natured spirit and gentle presence. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching football and applying his mathematical expertise to sports handicapping, casino games and poker. He was a longtime member of the original Bear Club in Lake Placid, where he formed lasting friendships and was appreciated for his breadth of skills, subtle humor and soft-spoken personality.

Gideon is survived by his wife Mary Anne Hawley; his children Gideon of Las Vegas, Nevada and Angela of Lake Placid; and his grandson Silas. He is also survived by his sister Susan Goff of Albuquerque, New Mexico, six nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

Burial and services will take place at Albany Rural Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Dec. 5, followed by a gathering of family and friends to share memories, remember Gideon and honor the life he lived.
