Arthur J. Charland Jr.

Arthur J. Charland Jr., 82, formerly of Saranac Lake, died at his home in New Mexico on Friday, July 4, 2025. Art, or “Sonny” as he was affectionately known, was born in Saranac Lake on Jan. 1, 1943, the son of Arthur Charland Sr. and Sylvia Donofrio Charland.

After graduating from Saranac Lake High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He retired after 20 years as a tech sergeant. He went on to various career opportunities after retirement, including owning and driving tractor trailers, working as a bus driver for the Saranac Lake Adult Center and St. Joseph’s Rehab, and serving as recycling coordinator at AMA. Art was a motorcycle enthusiast, a gun collector and an expert marksman.

In 1994, he married his soulmate and the love of his life, Terry Girouard White. They moved to Los Lunas, New Mexico and enjoyed many happy years together.

Art is survived by his wife Terry of New Mexico, daughter Ethel Marie (Garret) Borum of New Mexico, daughter Corinne (Dan) Murphy of Virginia, son Ashley (Rachel) White of South Carolina, sister Debbie (Jerry) Trim of Saranac Lake and Florida and sister Linda (Rocco) Piro of Grand Island. Also surviving are four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Art and Sylvia, and a brother, Nelson Charland.

His services were private and held in New Mexico.
