Constance ‘Connie’ Hickey

Constance “Connie” Hickey, 76, of Keene, died on June 4, 2025 after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Connie was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Dec. 24, 1948 to Art and Dot Wells. After moving back to Keene as a small child, Connie attended Keene Central School and graduated in 1966. She went on to study physical education at SUNY Cortland, earning her degree in 1970.

Connie taught PE and coached numerous sports at Ausable Valley and Keene Central Schools. One of her greatest loves was coaching softball at Keene, where she coached a number of championship teams in the early ’90s. Connie also earned a massage therapy license at Finger Lakes School of Massage in 1999. She also worked at Whiteface Mountain for 21 years, starting as a ski instructor in and retiring as the director of the Kid’s Campus ski program. Additionally, she served as the Keene Town Justice for 20 years.

Connie loved to be outdoors. She was frequently found gardening, playing golf or paddle tennis, fishing, canoeing, camping, skiing and swimming. She also had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed playing her guitars.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws Leo and Anne Hickey, her brother Jim Wells, and her son Leo Hickey. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Tom Hickey of Keene, daughter Carrie Hickey of Indian Trail, North Carolina, daughter-in-law Wendy Hickey, and granddaughters Elizabeth Hickey and Emily Hickey of Elizabethtown, her brother Tom Wells (Natalie) of Hartsel, Colorado, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will be having a private burial service in July. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America would be greatly appreciated.
