Ayupe was born on Sept. 17, 1934, in Tupper Lake, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Anecy (Frank) Shaheen. He graduated from Tupper Lake High School. Ayupe proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1959 and later was honorably discharged on May 22, 1962. Ayupe married Carolyn Meagher on April 2, 1959 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake, with Rev. Father John Crable officiating. She predeceased him on March 20, 2020. Ayupe began his career working alongside his parents at Shaheen’s Market, a family-run business that he later took over with his brothers Joe and Tom and managed with dedication for many years. Under their stewardship, the market thrived and was passed down through generations, now proudly operated by the fourth generation of his family. Expanding their entrepreneurial pursuits, they also established the Shaheen’s Motel on Park Street, which he and his wife successfully managed before eventually selling it.

Ayupe found great joy in visiting the casino, where he delighted in playing the slot machines and testing his luck at the blackjack and poker tables. A passionate enthusiast of horse racing, he also owned racehorses that competed at renowned tracks such as Saratoga Race Course and Vernon Downs. Above all, Ayupe cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, showering them with love — and, much to their delight, a generous supply of candy and sweets.
