Grace ‘Charley’ Homburger Darrah

Grace “Charley” Homburger Darrah passed away on May 2, 2024 in Churchville, where she was residing with her daughter, Sally, and son-in-law, Bill Haniford, for the past 12 years.

Charley (Grace Lucille Poole) was born in Anniston, Alabama on Aug. 10, 1925. She lived in Saranac Lake from the 1940s to 2012 and worked at Meyers Drug Store and Wilson’s during the Christmas holiday. Charley was an avid fisherwoman and hunter along with camping on Little Green Pond with her family.

She is survived by her children, Sally (Bill) Haniford, Susan Homburger, Tom (Diana) Homburger and Chris Homburger; grandchildren Travis (Mathew) Shaw, Jessica (Kieran) McGuiness, Jody (Khoa) Nguyen, Rachael (Steve) Gibson, Albert (Kristi) Homburger, Alicia Homburger and Lauren Pritchet; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Charley was predeceased by her father, T.C. Poole, an area foreman for Alabama Power; and mother, Jackie of Anniston, Alabama. Charley was the niece of Colonel Harland Sander of Kentucky Fried Chicken and enjoyed telling all of her southern stories whenever she had the opportunity. Her many interests included the Rock and Mineral Club in Lake Placid, where she was able to meet and speak with Neil Armstrong for a long time. Add in her antics and joking around and she was a force to be reckoned with. One time she baked Dr. Belaire a cake for Meyers Drug Store with the bottom layer made out of Styrofoam. She was always making someone laugh.

Private service at the convenience of the family. Interment will be held in her home state of Alabama.

Donations in memory of Charley to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.
