John Sheldrake

John (Pete) Sheldrake, 80, passed away in Palm Coast, Florida, on Sept. 6, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Pete was born on July 15, 1943, to Gladys (Kelly) and Ray Sheldrake. He married Maris Bombard on Nov. 11, 1960 in Lake Placid, New York.

He loved NACAR, golf and coffee with his friends at McDonald’s. In his younger years he worked three jobs simultaneously. Specifically, he operated the Doris II, Lady of the Lake and Anna passenger boats on Lake Placid while educating the passengers on the history of the lake. He also worked nights as a movie projector operator at the Harbor Theater. While moonlighting in these part-time jobs, he worked full-time doing oil delivery and service work for Raeoil Corporation until the business sold in the early ’80s. Pete, being a tradesman, then operated his own plumbing and heating business in Lake Placid until 2004, when he retired to Florida.

He had many talents including carpentry, plumbing, auto painting, amongst many other things. Pete will be missed by many for his knowledge, jokes and willingness to complete special home improvement projects for others.

He was predeceased by his parents Gladys and Ray Sheldrake. He is survived by his wife, Maris of 62 years who resides in Palm Coast, Florida; his three children Tammy (Thomas) Fontaine of Perkinsville, Vermont, Thomas (Judy) Sheldrake of Palm Coast, Florida, and Timothy (Janet) Sheldrake of Palm Coast, Florida, Grandchildren Kristina (Robert) Clifford of Saranac Lake, New York, Meagan Sheldrake of Newnan, Georgia, Liza Fontaine of North Liberty, Iowa, Chad Fontaine of Shrewsbury, Vermont, Dylan Sheldrake of St. Augustine, Florida, and Paige Sheldrake of St. Augustine, Florida, and two great grandchildren, Landon and Wesley Clifford of Saranac Lake, New York.

His final wishes were no calling hours or services, and the burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lake Placid Masonic Lodge or Alzheimer’s Association in his name.
