Barbara Jo Grey
Barbara Jo Grey, 69, a resident of Juniper Hill Road in the town of Sterling, passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Oswego Hospital.
Barbara was born in Saranac Lake, the daughter of Merle (Ross) Smith and the late Sydney Smith.
She graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1972 and went onto Oswego State University for her bachelor’s degree. She continued on to Syracuse University to get her master’s degree in special education.
Barbara was a library advocate, her first job being at the Saranac Lake Free Library. Later during her teaching years, she was a volunteer worker at the Cato Library. Prior to her retirement, she was employed for 15 years as a school teacher at the Cato-Meridian Elementary-Middle School. She had previously worked as a special education teacher in Syracuse.
Barbara loved antiques and enjoyed keeping her home in Sterling beautiful with her hand-picked items.
She is survived by her mother Merle of Saranac Lake, her husband John E. Grey of Sterling, her daughter Laurel (Zachary Millar) Grey of Australia, her grandson Jasper Millar of Australia, and a brother, Robert Smith of Pennsylvania.
Calling hours were held on July 28 at the Keysor-Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home in Cato. A private burial was held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Oswego.
