James H. Dalheim
James Hamilton Dalheim, 96, of Saranac Lake, died on Sunday, July 2, 2023.
Born in Albany, New York, he was the son of Edward and Jane Dalheim. James married Margaret Sarah Lester on April 16, 1949, in Lansingburgh, New York.
Mr. Dalheim was a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 26 years, coming from Latham, New York, where he was a resident until 1998. Jim, his wife Margaret and their family were summer residents of Upper Saranac Lake for 50 years before Margaret and Jim moved here permanently.
When first married, Jim started his master’s in engineering while working full time as a metallurgist for the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Watervliet. Starting in the laboratory, he continued his career with Allegheny Ludlum through to his retirement. He was an avid amateur radio operator (W2DYL), talking with family and friends across the world. Jim was an accomplished athlete enjoying sailing, water skiing, snow skiing, ice skating and snowmobiling with his family. Jim had a passion for anything he could construct, refurbish, or create. His most prized possession was an antique wooden boat that he meticulously refurbished and thoroughly enjoyed. He enjoyed many years of traveling the country with Margaret towing their beloved travel trailer. His love of gardening and everything outdoors continued even when mobility was difficult.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Peggy Ann Dalheim of Colorado, and Patricia Jane Roberts of Georgia; and one grandson, Arden James Roberts.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret, and his brother, Edward Dalheim.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, followed immediately by at funeral service at the funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Lake Clear.
