Marilyn S. Andrews
Marilyn (Lynn) S. (Thowless) Andrews of Saranac Lake passed away on Sept. 13 in hospice, at home with her family at her side.
Daughter of William H. and Marjorie Thowless, she was married to George J. Andrews for 67 years prior to his death in 2018, and was a mother of four.
She is survived by her children: Glenn Andrews of Tupper Lake, Gregory Andrews and his wife, Dawn Andrews of Addison, Maine, Sue Andrews and her partner Becky Warren of Pepperell, Massachussets and Robert Andrews of Saranac Lake, as well as her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Nicole Curtin, her husband Patrick and daughter Harper in Long Lake, and David Andrews, his wife Kaylee and daughter Kinsley of Phoenix, New York.
Lynn was born in Englewood, New Jersey and raised in Bogota, New Jersey and enjoyed summer residences at her grandmother’s tea and garden shop “Garden Brook” in Woodbury, Connecticut, attending Bogota High School and then worked as a secretary in the banking industry with daily commutes on the ferry across the Hudson River to Wall Street. Lynn and George married in September 1951 and lived in New Milford and Westwood, New Jersey where they started their family before moving to “Pine Tree Farm” in River Vale, New Jersey where they welcomed two more children and began a 20-plus year operation of the garden and nursery there.
After George’s retirement, they moved to Shohola, Pennsylvania, then to Tupper Lake, enjoying travel to Alaska and many points in the U.S. They cruised through the Panama Canal, a trip long-promised by George, having traveled there with the Army when transiting to the Philippines in 1945. In 2010, they moved to Saranac Lake, and enjoyed living at Saranac Village at Will Rogers.
Lynn will be remembered for her dedication to her family, community, and friends: a supporter of the scouting, sporting, acting, adventuring children and grandchildren she treasured; as an active member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Old Tappan, New Jersey; a founding member and volunteer of the WildCenter in Tupper Lake; a seamstress and quilt-maker independently and with the Raquette River Quilters; a Meals on Wheels volunteer; the candle-making specialist for Project Alfalfa; and a noted in the River Vale neighborhood as the source of popular candy apples on Halloween.
Lynn loved nature, beginning with her experiences as a Campfire Girl in her youth, and every step out the door had the potential to become a nature walk, whether noting bird songs, trees, plants, or flowers. Lynn’s more recent past times included reading books and poetry (her favorite: “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer) and crossword puzzles, as well as walking and the many activities available at Will Rogers.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983. A celebration of Lynn’s life is being planned for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Saranac Village at Will Rogers.
In lieu of flowers, and with thanks to these organizations, donations may be made to the following: Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association (https://saranaclakevha.org) and High Peaks Hospice (https://highpeakshospice.org) in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
