Douglas C. Swinyer

Douglas C. Swinyer, age 78, of Vermontville, died unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, in Blue Mountain Lake.

Doug was born in Saranac Lake on July 16, 1943, the son of Francis “Bill” and Edna (Wright) Swinyer. He married Gale (McClatchie) on April 2, 1988. She predeceased him on July 16, 2009.

Doug was a lifelong resident of Vermontville and a graduate of Saranac Lake High School. Doug loved to travel and one of the memorable trips was Japan.

Doug was devoted to his family above all else.

Doug worked for Dave Young on Young’s potato farm for 23 years and stayed on when it became Leavitt’s for three more years. Doug worked for various contractors which included his good friend and mentor Jay Dawson. His time spent with Jay learning the trade led Doug to start, own, and operate his own rustic furniture business.

Doug was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved being in the outdoors and working on his rustic furniture, but most of all Doug loved spending time with family and friends.

Doug is survived by his first cousin and closest friend Geneva Romeo, his sister-in-law Joyce Swinyer, and his nephews Ed Swinyer (Tammy Rienstra) of Vermontville, Kevin Swinyer of Delaware, and Scott Swinyer of Vermontville, one brother in-law Brian McClatchie, and numerous cousins, family, and friends.

In addition to his wife Gail, Doug was preceded in death by his father Francis, his mother Edna, and his brother John.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021 at Union Cemetery in Vermontville with Pastor Eric Olsen officiating.
