Joseph H. Smith

On Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, Joseph H. Smith of Johnson Avenue in Lake Placid passed away peacefully at the age of 90, with his wife and daughter at his side.

Joe was born Dec. 29, 1929, the youngest son of John Henry and Eva Cotton Smith.

Joe graduated from Lake Placid High School in the Class of 1948. He then entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 7, 1951, as a Medical Corps man. He served honorably in Austria until Feb. 2, 1953, when he was discharged at the rank of corporal and returned to Lake Placid.

Upon his return home, Joe married Nancy Ann Fisk on Sept. 19, 1964, and went to work at the Lake Placid Club Resort as a chauffeur for many years. He spent most of his adult life working at the Grand Union in Lake Placid as produce manager. He later worked for the Lake Placid Central School District until his retirement in 1991.

Although Joe wouldn’t admit it, animals played a big part in his life, from his golden retriever Fred to his two cats, Sam and Molly, and the countless creatures he would feed outside his home. He lived a long and happy life in the Adirondacks, and will be missed by many.

Joe is survived by his wife Nancy of Oak Creek, Wisconsin; four children: daughter Lorraine and husband Robert Machado Jr. of Napa, California, son Stephen and his wife Rita Ladoceour of Palm Coast, Florida, son Joseph H. Smith II and his wife April of Lewisburg, West Virginia, and daughter Karen and husband Scott Szemborski of Franklin, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his brother John Dustin Smith of Lake Placid and four grandchildren: Rebecca Smith Brandt and her husband Chris of Dover, New Hampshire, Robert Machado III, and Keiran and Kaden Smith; one great-granddaughter, Ivelle Willow Brandt; and a great-grandson on the way.

He was predeceased by his sisters Rosemarie Smith, Theresa (Smith) Favro, Merial (Smith) WIllis, Rita (Smith) Hartson and Lera (Smith) Lincoln.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, there will be a private family burial at St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid and a public memorial service at a later date.

The M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements. Relatives and friends are invited to share a memory, upload a photo or leave condolences at www.mbclarkfuneralhome.com.
