George O. Hewlett

George Omer Hewlett passed away suddenly at age 83, on March 26, 2014 at Florida Hospital, Apopka, Fla.

George was born April 11, 1930, the son of Stanley and Grace Hefferon Hewlett, in Russell. He graduated from Knox Memorial High School, Russell in 1947.

George married his wife Anna Kelly Bennett on April 22, 1957 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton. He and Anna made their home at 3830 S. Citrus Circle, Zellwood, FL 32798.

George joined the Army Airborne and was assigned to the 11th Division in Fort Campbell, Ky. George was a paratrooper and served in combat in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952.

He went to work for Niagara Mohawk in 1952 as a lineman and retired as a superintendant, Potsdam, in 1992. After retirement, he went on to become a Potsdam town justice for 14 years. He also served as town justice in Fowler; Hermon and Vermontville.

He is survived by his wife Anna; sons: Richard and (Michele), Charles and (Rebecca), George III and (Gina); daughter Carla and (John); and eight grandchildren; brother David; sister Shirley; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Kelly Marie, in October 1975; brothers: Leo, James, Mark and Richard; and two sisters: Helen and Lorna.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Potsdam, with Msgr. Robert Aucoin officiating and Msgr. John Murphy concelebrating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Potsdam.
