Bernard J. Quigley
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Bernard James Quigley, who died in his sleep on February 27, 2014, was loved by many people. He, in turn, loved people and captivated all with his deep reservoir of jokes and humorous stories.
Jim was born in Saranac Lake in 1937. His early passion for music revealed itself by his membership in the Saranac Lake High School chorus and the band. He played the clarinet and, later in life, studied the classical guitar at Julliard School of Music. Jim’s early life in Saranac Lake resulted in friendships which remained active until his death.
After high school, Jim was enrolled in the Wadhams Hall Seminary College and later attended the Crane School of Music. He taught English at Lynbrook High School in Lynbrook, Long Island for more than 10 years. Students, who affectionately called him “Mr. Quigs,” loved his commitment, zaniness and flair.
When he moved to East Hampton, Jim entered the travel industry which became his occupation until he died. He worked with Unique Travel, in Delay Beach, since moving to Florida 18 years ago. His occupation enabled him to travel the world. Jim had an appreciation of all things beautiful.
He loved classical music and especially opera, having attended the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years. He was also a devoted fan of the “Lawrence Welk Show.” Jim was a gourmet cook who entertained friends with style and wit. He was kind, generous, and just. He has a large community of friends who loved him deeply and were family to him.
He leaves behind Gerald K. Kerr, his beloved partner of 31 years, whom he married in Washington, D.C., in 2010.
A memorial for Jim was held at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens March 9 in Gainesville, Fla.
