SARANAC LAKE — The third-grade students in Katie Gaylord’s class at St. Bernard’s School recently took a walking field trip to the Saranac Lake Post Office on March 27 to send personalized and typed letters to loved ones.
“The majority of my class had never mailed a real letter before! You can imagine the excitement, even from observers!” Gaylord said. “Students experienced the thrill of addressing an envelope and waiting for a reply, as they proudly used their English Language Arts skills while also practicing real-world patience.”
She said this class writing activity paired nicely with the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards.
As a way to celebrate their efforts, students enjoyed an ice cream treat from Stewart’s, all thanks to a volunteer reader who gifted 16 ice creams to the class after she read the story, “Should I Share My Ice Cream?” by Mo Willems.
Family members are invited to sign-up to read anytime throughout the year as part of the St. Bernard’s Grade 3 Reading Revolution.
