North Country justice resigns after pro-vigilantism, anti-transgender social media posts

Stockholm, N.Y. — A St. Lawrence County town justice has resigned and agreed to never return to the bench after being charged with multiple acts of misconduct including biased social media posts, according to the state Commission on Judicial Conduct.

Kevin E. Fiske, a justice of the Stockholm Town Court, was also charged with misconduct for improper communications in cases and using his judicial position to promote private business interests, the commission said in a news release Tuesday.

Fiske was accused of posting content on his public Facebook page that reflected bias, including posts expressing support for vigilantism, derogatory content about transgender individuals and commentary that could undermine confidence in the legal system, the commission said.

Fiske also improperly used the prestige of his judicial office to promote his private businesses, including referencing them on the court’s official website and on a business social media page, the commission said. The two businesses were Hacker Sports, a local hockey shop, and Black Horse Investigations and Security, which provides private investigative services, the commission said.

“Public confidence in a fair and impartial court is undermined when the judge decides a case after hearing one side without notice to the other,” Commission Administrator Robert H. Tembeckjian said in a statement. “Nor does it promote respect for the law when a judge endorses vigilantism.”

The commission also said Fiske engaged in unauthorized nonparty communications — speaking with defendants without prosecutors present — and dismissed or reduced charges without notice to or consent from the prosecution in multiple cases.

In September 2024, Fiske handled a series of traffic cases without a representative from the district attorney’s office present and dismissed or reduced charges after hearing directly from defendants, the commission said.

Fiske, who is not an attorney, had served as a town justice since April 2023. His term was set to expire Dec. 31, 2027.
