Fresh summit snow
A snow gun blasts away atop the Upper Skyward trail at the Whiteface Mountain ski center’s summit area on Tuesday in the town of Wilmington. The High Peaks and a temperature inversion can be seen behind it. In an inversion, a layer of warm air sits above colder air closer to the ground, which traps moisture as it typically needs a continuously cooling column of air to keep rising. This results in low-level clouds, clear mountain summits and wispy fair-weather clouds higher up in the atmosphere. The Sentinel Range can be seen in the immediate background. Behind it, from left, are Giant, Cascade, Porter and Big Slide mountains. Behind those, from left, are Dix Mountain, Nippletop, Lower Wolf Jaw, Upper Wolf Jaw, Armstrong, Gothics, Saddleback and Basin mountains, Mount Haystack and TableTop Mountain.
