Structure fire causes heavy damage to Lake Clear rental cabin

No deaths or injuries reported

LAKE CLEAR — One of the Rockledge Cabins, a short-term rental property, was heavily damaged after a Saturday afternoon structure fire. There were no deaths or injuries, and the group of renters staying there at the time had made it out when firefighters first arrived.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to 6088 state Route 30 at 1:35 p.m. Saturday. The Bloomingdale, Lake Placid, Paul-Smiths-Gabriels and Tupper Lake volunteer fire departments all responded with mutual aid.

There was heavy fire underneath the structure, coming from the right rear corner when firefighters first arrived on scene, according to SLVFD Chief Michael Knapp. He said it took firefighters about an hour to knock down the flames, which was followed by an extensive overhaul of the approximately 400-foot structure.

Firefighters established a draft from the Lake Clear outlet, which Knapp estimated was between a quarter and a half mile from the fire. Water was sourced from a dry hydrant — common in outlying areas without traditional municipal hydrant systems — and transported by tanker trucks to the scene. Knapp estimated that about 10,000 gallons of water were used.

This came just three days after the same departments responded to a structure fire in Onchiota, and two days ahead of a predicted ice and wind storm that could require additional responses from firefighters.

“We rely on our neighboring departments and our neighboring communities to come over and give us assistance. Everyone’s been working together,” he said. “It’s a group effort right now. Everybody’s down on volunteers.”
