Bomber girls XC finish 8th, ‘Jacks boys earn 10th at states

QUEENSBURY — The Lake Placid girls cross country team closed out the season with an eighth-place finish at the NYSPHSAA cross country championships on Saturday at Queensbury High School. Meanwhile, the Tupper Lake boys, who claimed the Section X, Class D title a week ago, finished 10th in the state for Class D racing.

The Tri-Lakes had 22 total runners compete at the state meet across all three schools — Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake — and in both the boys and girls races. The Red Storm competed in the Class C race, while the Lumberjacks and Blue Bombers were in Class D.

After finishing as state runner-ups last year, the Lake Placid girls placed eighth as a team in the girls’ Class D race with 160 points. Tri-Valley claimed the team crown with 62 points, while Harley-Allendale Columbia was second with 84 and Beaver River was third with 93.

The Blue Bombers’ Leila Fey, an eighth-grader, led the way with an eighth-place overall finish in 18 minutes, 49.3 seconds, which was the fastest time among all girls runners from Section VII. Fey’s teammate Norah Francis, also an eighth-grader, finished next, placing 15th in 19:51.8. The two were named state medalists for finishing inside the top-20 in their respective races.

Tri-Valley’s Anna Furman (18:06.9) won the individual title, while Pine Plains’ Violet Bliss (18:36.9) was second, followed by Friends Academy’s Ariana Madeira (18:39.7) in third. The race featured 115 total runners.

Lake Placid’s girls squad was rounded out by Ruth Mahaney, an eighth-grader, who placed 82nd in 23:09.6, Holly Erenstone, a senior, who finished in 84th at 23:17.5 and Rose Wenzler, a sophomore, who earned 109th in 25:57.1.

Tupper Lake’s lone two girls runners, juniors Ava Facteau (24:46.6) and Kayla Barber (24:59.8), finished in 104th and 106th, respectively

In the girls Class C race, freshman Nora Daley led Saranac Lake in her first appearance at the state meet with a 30th-place finish in 19:51.2. The Red Storm were then rounded out by senior Asa Bruno (20:20.7) in 46th and sophomore Cadence Kennedy (21:19.3) in 79th.

Bronxville’s Mia Horgan (17:51.7) won the Class C girls title out of 132 racers. Academy of Holy Names’ Maeve Joyce (17:53.9) was second and Williamson-Marion’s Hannah Governor (18:02.5) was third.

Bronxville won the team title as well, earning 77 points. Saranac Central, which the Red Storm defeated during the regular season, placed second overall with 86 points. East Aurora was third with 103 points, while Section X’s Norwood-Norfolk was seventh with 174.

On the boys side, Lumberjacks senior Jonah Kendall (17:28.5) had the best finish among area runners in the state Class D race, placing 47th overall. Teammate and junior Sean Wood (18:18.5) finished in 72nd, followed by sophomore Garrett Wormuth (18:48.1) in 87th. Tupper Lake finished 10 overall with 206 points.

Port Jefferson won the state title with 51 points, while Maple Grove was second with 68 and Marcus Whitman High School was third with 92. Section VII’s Ticonderoga was seventh with 174 points.

The Lumberjacks were rounded out by junior Ethan Barkley (18:52.6) in 91st, junior Brady Skiff (21:36.1) was 119th, freshman Ira Kendall (27:08.7) in 123rd and junior Nolan Wilson (29:09.8) in 124th.

Sophomore Graham Scull led the Blue Bomber boys crew with a 65th-place finish in 17:59.7. Doug Guglielmi, an eighth-grader, finished right behind in 67th place at 18:04.4. His brother, Jim Guglielmi, a junior, was 71st in 18:14.4 and fellow junior Jesse Carlson (19:40.2) was 109th.

Arkport-Canaseraga’s Ibrahim Ford (15:30.9) won the state individual title. Waterville’s Danny Casatelli was second in 15:42.4 and Haldane’s Owen Powers was third in 15:44.5.

In Class C racing, Saranac Lake’s junior Emmett Vanbuskirk, the lone Red Storm boy to compete at states, placed 51st overall in 17:18.3. Lansing’s Trent Thibault won the boys Class C individual title in 15:28.2, while East Aurora won the team title with 30 points, edging out Irvington with 98 for second place and Saranac Central in third with 134. Section X’s Potsdam earned eighth as a team with 176 points.
