SARANAC LAKE — With store aisles lined with candy and costumes, menus filled with pumpkin-flavored offerings and porches donning jack-o’-lanterns, Halloween is once again knocking on the doorstep across the Tri-Lakes region.
The region has a storied tradition of events to celebrate the spooky holiday, along with a slate of new features this year.
Trick-or-treaters and those venturing out on Friday, be warned: you might want to bring an umbrella or poncho. While still a few days away, the current forecast for Friday calls for scattered rain showers with afternoon highs in the low 50s falling to the upper 30s with increasingly windy conditions by late evening, according to the National Weather Service’s Burlington, Vermont office, which serves the Tri-Lakes area.
Below are some of the events on deck this week.

Saranac Lake
–
The village of Saranac Lake will feature a wide array of Halloween-day events and activities. Participating businesses throughout Saranac Lake will be handing out candy from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday. Costumes are encouraged and the event — geared toward children and their families — is free.
The Saranac Lake Police Department will be on hand and will close off a portion of Broadway from the Harrietstown Town Hall to the intersection with Bloomingdale Avenue to traffic during the three hours.
The Saranac Lake Baptist Church, located at 460 Broadway, will also host a free trunk-or-treat event from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in its parking lot. The event promises “candy, decorations, food and fun,” according to the church’s website.
Trunk-or-treat events function like kid-friendly tailgate parties, where participants meet at one central location to get and give treats, rather than venturing out onto the streets to trick-or-treat at various residences. The events — which began in the 1990s — have gained in popularity in recent years, as families see them as safer and logistically easier alternatives or additions to trick-or-treating.
Bitters & Bones will be hosting a karaoke costume contest for those 21+ from 10 p.m. to close on Friday at 65 Broadway. DJ Just Ben from EDM Music will be there, and there will be prizes of $100, $75 and $50 for the best costumes.
The Rusty Nail will host the Darkside Skinny Dippers Annual Halloween Bash from 8 p.m. until close on Friday at 83 Broadway. There’s no cover fee and costumes are encouraged.
The Waterhole will host a Halloween Bash featuring Chestnut Grove and All Night Boogie Band for those 21 at 48 Main St. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8:30 p.m. Costumes are encouraged and there will be a contest. A $15 cover and RSVP is requested at tinyurl.com/5cyfvkzt.
For those looking to extend the Halloween spirit into the weekend, Romano’s Saranac Lanes, 11 Bloomingdale Ave., will host a Halloween bowling costume party from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Lanes must be reserved in advance by calling 518-891-8301. It is $65 for one lane for up to five people for two hours of bowling. There will be prizes for the best costumes and lanes will be decorated in the Halloween spirit. Those who get a strike with a Green Frankenpin head pin will win a free game of bowling.
Also on Saturday, the Garagery (rear entrance of Grizle T’s, from Dorsey Street parking lot) will be hosting a Halloween Rave from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. The event promises to be an electrifying night with high-energy DJ sets, stunning visual effects and a dedicated Kandi booth. Costumes are encouraged.
For those looking to get an early jump on the activities, Bitters & Bones will be hosting a Halloween-themed trivia night from 7 to 9 p.m. today. All ages are welcome, with people encouraged to bring friends and family to form teams of up to six players. Prizes will be awarded for the top teams.
Also ahead of Halloween, Historic Saranac Lake will be hosting a spooky-themed game night at the Saranac Laboratory Museum, located at 89 Church St., from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Historic Saranac Lake is partnering with Goody Goody’s, of Saranac Lake, to provide Halloween-themed snacks and drinks. The event is free and open to everyone of all ages. Costumes are encouraged but not required. The museum notes on its website that the halls will be decked out in a spooky decor fit for the occasion.
Historic Saranac Lake also notes on its website that even if people aren’t interested in board games, the event — along with their full suite of museum after-hours events throughout the year — offers a great way to get to know people in the community in a relaxed and stress-free setting.
