The election for numerous local, county and state offices is exactly one month away.

This article contains information on deadlines to register to vote or get absentee ballots, when and where early voting will take place, who is running, how to write a candidate in, the statewide proposal impacting Mount Van Hoevenberg and how some people elected next month may have shorter terms than usual.

The general election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. To look at where local polling sites will be, go to voterlookup.elections.ny.gov.

Early voting will take place from Oct. 25 through Nov. 2.

Deadlines

–

The deadline to register to be eligible to vote in the general election is Oct. 25. This is a Saturday, but the board of elections office will be open until 5 p.m. to get last-minute registrations.

This is also the deadline to postmark applications for an early mail ballot or an absentee ballot by mail, fax or the online portal at tinyurl.com/22a69nxv. In-person requests for early mail or absentee ballots can be made until Nov. 3. The last day to postmark a returning ballot is Nov. 3.

Franklin County will have extended office hours for registration and absentee or early mail voting from 4 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 23.

The deadline for the board to receive a change of address before the election is Oct. 20.

Early voting locations and times

Early voting in Essex County will take place at the Lake Placid Beach House at 49 Parkside Dr. in Lake Placid and at the Essex County Public Safety Building at 702 Stowersville Road in Lewis.

Early voting polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 25, 26, 28, 30, 31 and Nov. 1 and 2. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 29.

Early voting in Franklin County will be held in the Courthouse Kitchen Conference Room at 355 West Main St. in Malone.

Early voting polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 25, 26, 27, 29, 31 and Nov. 1 and 2. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on Oct. 28 and 30.

Voters casting a ballot during early voting will not be eligible to vote on Election Day.

Proposal

There will be one statewide proposal on the back of the ballot, and it has local implications.

Voters around the state will have a say on whether the winter sports complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg will be brought into compliance with the state Constitution, and if the state will add land to the Adirondack Forest Preserve.
