SARANAC LAKE — A man and woman from Saranac Lake were charged with drug and stolen property crimes by village police after a multi-agency raid of their apartment on Tuesday.

The search warrant brought local police, county sheriff’s and state police to 225 Lake Street, the Volunteers of America’s Adirondack Apartment complex.

Wade A. Cayea, 45, of Saranac Lake was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, as well as second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors.

Melissa R. Lane, 44, of Saranac Lake was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Both Cayea and Lane were released with appearance tickets for Harrietstown Town Court.

SLPD Chief Darin Perrotte said the stolen property charge stems from the discovery of more than $5,000 worth in power tools that were reported stolen from Coakley’s Hardware over the past couple of weeks.

He said the search also found more than $13,000 in cash, as well as cocaine, pills and psilocybin mushrooms and “paraphernalia associated with narcotics use and distribution.”

He said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected.

Perrotte said this search warrant came after a “lengthy investigation” in collaboration with New York State Police looking into narcotics distribution in Saranac Lake and surrounding towns.

He said the amount of drugs found was small — consistent with personal use — but added that they found other evidence, including scales, baggies and packaging.

The endangering the welfare of a child charge came because they had a child living with them when the police arrived with a search warrant. Perrotte said the child was released to their mother, who lives separately.

The Northern Regional Response Team is comprised of sheriff’s offices from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, as well as Malone and Ticonderoga Police Departments. The team brought large trucks and extra officers. Perrotte said police use the NRRT often in search warrants, for the safety of officers and the public.

The State Police provided assistance through their Troop B Community Stabilization Unit and Violent Gangs and Narcotics Enforcement Team.

“The Saranac Lake Police Department is committed to keeping our community safe and will continue to work diligently to combat crime through our collaboration with our partners in law enforcement,” Perrotte said in a statement.
