Bartók at Left Bank

Violist Mat Maneri and pianist Lucian Ban perform improvised pieces based on the field recordings of Béla Bartók at Monday’s Transylvanian Dance Concert at the Left Bank Café. Bartók is known as one of the first ethnomusicologists, traveling across Eastern Europe and recording the diverse variety of folk songs in isolated villages. The composer’s path also took him to Saranac Lake, where he came to recover from an illness, which ended up being leukemia. He composed several of his last masterpieces in Saranac Lake before his death in 1945. (Enterprise photo — Grace McIntyre)
