Tupper Lake Train Station design charette set for Saturday

Community invited to help shape the Tupper Lake Train Station site

TUPPER LAKE — The Town of Tupper Lake invites residents and stakeholders to participate in a Community Design Charette on Saturday, May 3. The session is focused on envisioning the future of the Tupper Lake Train Station site.

This hands-on event will bring together local voices and a professional design team to explore site design opportunities that reflect community values and enhance connectivity, accessibility and sense of place at this key gateway to the Adirondack Rail Trail.

The Town of Tupper Lake received a $300,000 grant through the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Adirondack Smart Growth Grant Program to support site improvements. The town plans to begin construction — led by a combination of Town and Village staff and volunteers — as soon as the site becomes available following the completion of state Department of Transportation’s rail work.

The design team will build on ideas and input gathered through prior planning efforts, including work by the Rail Trail Readiness Task Force, the Tupper Lake Economic Development Committee, and the Village of Tupper Lake’s Junction Connectivity Study and Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.

The design charette is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with welcoming remarks and introduction of the design team, who will share project goals and its timeline. Attendees will be given time here to introduce themselves. At 9:30 a.m., there will be a site tour. The guided walkthrough of the train station site will highlight key areas for improvement.

At 10:30 a.m., there will be a presentation of the preliminary site design ideas, with the public and stakeholders able to offer feedback and responses to those proposed ideas at 11 a.m. The event will conclude at 11:30 a.m. with a consolidation of ideas and feedback gathered that morning, as well as the design team informing attendees of its next steps in the process.

“This process is all about the community,” town Supervisor Rick Dattola said. “We want the station site to feel welcoming to our visitors — a place that reflects Tupper Lake’s vision for the future, a place that we can all be proud of. We hope all who have ideas to share will attend.”

Starting at $4.75/week.
