Tupper Lake school board to vote on adopting budget today

TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake Central School District is scheduled to hold a special Board of Education meeting at 3:30 p.m. today at the L.P. Quinn Elementary School’s library.

The board is slated to vote on adopting the 2025-26 school budget, following a report from TLCSD Superintendent Jaycee Welsh. The proposed budget in today’s meeting agenda is the same total budgeted amount, $21,982,546, from the district’s March 31 meeting, when it was first publicly released. During that meeting, Welsh noted that it was subject to change before the board adopts it.

The proposed tax levy, $10,703,630, in today’s agenda is also unchanged from March 31. The figure represents a 3.08% increase from the 2024-25 school budget’s $10,383,450 levy, and it meets the tax cap. That means, if it is adopted by the board, the budget would require a simple majority from district voters to pass. This comes as TLCSD’s consumer price index rose 2.95% from last year. Welsh said the figure was calculated and provided by the district’s financial advisor, Rick Timbs.

TLCSD voters will also consider two proposals — a bus purchase and creation of a capital reserve fund — and elect a member to the board. There is one seat up for election this year. The deadline for candidates to submit their paperwork was Monday.

With the deadline to file having passed, Welsh said on Wednesday that Josh Tremblay, who currently holds the position, is the only candidate running for the seat. An earlier article with more information on the proposals and board member election can be found at tinyurl.com/mr2xxv37.

The TLCSD’s budget vote is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, with polls open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Middle-High School library.

Welsh said there are six scheduled budget information sessions for people to ask questions and learn about the budget before the May vote. Dates and locations are expected to be released once the board votes to adopt the budget.

The TLCSD board is scheduled to hold a special meeting in the District Office Conference Room, located adjacent to the L.P. Quinn Elementary School, at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday for the annual Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES budget vote. The TLCSD’s next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, May 12, at L.P. Quinn’s library. For a full agenda of today’s meeting, visit tinyurl.com/5xx2zy49.
