Biden, Trump sweep local presidential primaries

In Franklin and Essex counties, few Republicans and Democrats participated in their presidential primaries on Tuesday, and the outcome was unsurprising — incumbent Democrat Joe Biden and former Republican president Donald Trump continued to pick up delegates locally.

Franklin County

In Franklin County, 496 Democrats voted in their primary. Biden had a clear edge there with 393 votes, 84.33% of the total. Dean Phillips got 46 votes for 9.87% and Marianne Williamson got 27 votes for 5.79%. There were 28 undervotes, meaning the ballot was left blank.

In Franklin County, 481 Republicans voted in their primary. Trump had a clear edge with 375 votes, 78.95% of the total. Nikki Haley got 67 for 14.11%, Chris Christie got 24 for 5.05% and Vivek Ramaswamy got 9 for 1.89%. There were five undervotes, meaning the ballot was left blank, and one overvote, meaning the voter voted for more than one candidate.

In total — including early and absentee votes — 147 people voted in Saranac Lake and 89 voted in Tupper Lake.

Franklin County Democrats also had five potential delegates to send to represent the 21st Congressional District at the Democratic National Convention this summer — Michael Monescalchi, Jason Clark, Sara Idleman, Michael J. Zagrobelny and Lynne Boecher.

There were five slots open, and all five got around one-fifth of the vote with little variation.

Essex County

In Essex County, 622 Democrats voted in their primary. Biden had a clear edge there with 503 votes. Williamson and Phillips got 24 votes each. There were 71 undervotes, meaning the ballot was left blank.

In New York, there was a Democratic campaign to leave primary ballots blank to protest Biden’s support of the deadly Israeli war in Gaza.

In Essex County, 702 Republicans voted in their primary. Trump had a clear edge with 502 votes. Haley got 146 votes, Christie got 24 and Ramaswamy got seven. There were 23 undervotes.

There are still 38 absentee ballots to be counted in Essex County. These ballots must arrive by the end of April 9 to be counted.

In total — including early and absentee votes — 81 people voted in Keene, 200 voted in North Elba, 42 voted in St. Armand and 39 voted in Wilmington.

Essex County Democrats also had five potential delegates to send to represent the 21st Congressional District at the Democratic National Convention this summer — Michael Monescalchi, Jason Clark, Sara Idleman, Michael J. Zagrobelny and Lynne Boecher.

There were five slots open, and all five got around one-fifth of the vote with little variation.

Both Trump and Biden already have enough delegates secured to earn nominations at their respective party conventions. Meanwhile, most other candidates who have dropped out have a handful of delegates, and those remaining in the race have no delegates.

With Trump and Biden being the likely major party nominees, the country is set up for a repeat of the 2020 election, in which Biden previously beat incumbent Trump with 51.3% of the vote.

The general election is on Nov. 5. The state Board of Elections can be contacted at 518-474-1953.
