Scholarships available for medical, law students in Franklin County

The Academic Board of Trustees of Franklin Academy is accepting applications for three postgraduate scholarships through April 15.

The scholarships will be announced at the Academic Awards Ceremony at Franklin Academy in Malone in June.

Alfred A. Hartmann Medical Scholarship

This scholarship may be awarded to a current or entering medical school student or students residing in Franklin County pursuant to the terms of a gift established by the last will and testament of Erma Scanlon.

The scholarship honors the contributions and memory of Hartmann, who served his community as a physician from the 1940s until his death in 2000.

Dr. Gerald and Carla Cahill Medical Scholarship

This scholarship may be awarded to a current or entering medical school student or students.

This scholarship is provided by Dr. Gerald Cahill and Carla Cahill in support of healthcare for the community. Gerald Cahill has been a decades-long physician for a family practice, the prison system and Malone Central schools.

Carla Cahill worked at Alice Hyde Medical Center in many departments from the age of 18, finishing her career as a registered nurse.

Hon. Robert G. Main, Sr. and Hon. Robert G. Main, Jr. Legal Scholarship

This scholarship may be awarded to a current or entering law school student or students residing in the Fourth Judicial District with primary consideration being given to residents of Franklin County.

The scholarship was created in 2002 by Ann Manson Main in honor of her late husband and her son. Judge Robert Main, Sr., who died in 1998, served as a member of the New York state Assembly and, for 28 years, as a Justice of the Supreme Court at the trial level and as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Third Department. Judge Robert Main, Jr., served as Franklin County judge, surrogate, acting Family Court judge and acting Justice of the Supreme Court for 34 years until his retirement in 2021.

Applicants for the scholarships must apply in writing by not later than April 15. The application may be in letter or resume form and should include information concerning academic performance at the undergraduate and graduate level, the applicant’s basis for seeking an award and plans or aspirations upon graduation, particularly with respect to plans to return to the North Country to practice upon the completion of their education and training. Any references should accompany applications, in separately sealed envelopes, and should not be submitted separately. Applications will become the property of the trustees and will not be returned.
