Two emerging authors and artists visit ACW this week

SARANAC LAKE — 2020 Anne LaBastille Memorial Writing Resident Kate Doyle will visit the Adirondack Center for Writing at 7 p.m. Wednesday to present her debut book of short stories, “I Meant it Once” (Algonquin Books, 2023), which was released this month.

Doyle worked on this book while in residence at ACW’s annual Anne LaBastille Memorial Writing Residency on Twitchell Lake near Big Moose. Doyle will be in conversation with author Erin Dorney, who also attended the 2020 residency. The pair will discuss Doyle’s new book as well as their experiences at Twitchell Lake.

Doyle and Dorney met at the residency at Twitchell Lake and have gone on to attend other retreats together, proving that a residency can create long-lasting community among writers. Audience questions will be welcome.

Doyle, a former bookseller and a 2021 A Public Space Fellow, has lived in New York City, Amsterdam and Ithaca, New York. Her stories have appeared or are forthcoming in No Tokens, Joyland, Split Lip and Electric Literature.

On Friday at 6 p.m., ACW will welcome artist, writer, dancer and performer Theresa-Xuan Bui for an artist talk as part of the Friday Night Writes Series.

Bui is a queer non-binary Vietnamese-American artist. Through drawing and dancing, Bui translates embodied practice into a performance of language and sound. Born and raised in Bronx, Bui has lived in Houston before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Bui will discuss how they use writing to establish space for their loved ones, their sisters, the liminal, the radical, the exquisite and the unseen.

Friday Night Writes offers anyone a free, comfortable space to work on their writing from 3 to 6 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. At 6 p.m., ACW hosts a guest speaker (a regional writer, journalist or member of an arts organization) to give a short talk and take audience questions as a means of building community among North Country writers and artists.
