SARANAC LAKE — While the Mountaineers Rugby Club of Saranac Lake didn’t come away with a championship title in any division at this year’s Can-Am Rugby tournament, two of its players were able to help another squad win a crown on Sunday.

After the Mountaineers’ top men’s squad — the men’s club team — fell in the semifinals to the Cardinals Rugby team 15-5 on Saturday, brothers Forrest and Kevin Morgan, both of Saranac Lake, joined the Lumberjacks RFC for their team’s championship contest in the men’s social division.

“I’ve got some friends on that team. One of my buddies Andrew Spencer, I know he’s always looking for players,” Kevin said. “I love playing on the social side.”

After losing on Saturday, Kevin reached out to his friend about possibly playing.

“He was like, ‘Yeah, I could potentially use you,'” Kevin said.

Both Forrest and Kevin played a significant amount while the Lumberjacks defeated SLOBS Rugby (Slippery Rock University Alumni) 49-3 to win the title.

“It’s not as nice when it’s not your own home team, but it’s pretty fun,” said Kevin, who helped lead the Mountaineers to the tournament’s social division crown in 2017 and 2018.

While the Lumberjacks dominated from the get-go, Kevin was able to score a try in the late stages of the contest, after collecting the ball around the midpoint of Petrova Field.

“I saw an opening, and I went for it. I was like, ‘I can’t let these guys catch me,'” he said. “And I walked in.”

Sunday marked the final day of the Can-Am Rugby tournament, which ended after the men’s club division championship contest. The White Plains Rugby Football Club (Warpigs) won the men’s club title 24-8 over the Cardinals Rugby team — the same squad that eliminated the Mountaineers a day prior.

In the women’s club division, the Bean Burgers cruised to a 27-5 victory over the Olde Girls. The Bean Burgers dominated from the start, leading 12-0 before the Olde Girls scored five points at halftime. During the second half, the Bean Burgers recorded 15 straight points.

The Mountaineers women’s team was defeated in the quarterfinals 24-14 by the Steel Magnolias Too on Saturday. In the women’s social division, the Burbany Mom Jeans defeated the Rochester Renegades 19-12

The Connecticut Grey won two Old Boys divisions. The Grey defeated TEAM FUN 26-24 in the over-35-division and the Schenectady Reds 17-5 in the over-45 division.

In the over-55 division, Chesty’s Disciples beat the Connecticut Grey 20-7. The Cardinals Rugby topped Mystical Geese 13-8 in the over-60 division.
