Flood watch for Franklin and Essex Counties

Recent rain has prompted officials to warn of flash flood conditions across the region.

A flood warning has been called for southeast Franklin County and much of central Essex County, including Lake Placid. A less severe flood watch covers most of both counties, missing only the northwest corner of Franklin County.

The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is scheduled to expire at 7:45 p.m., and the watch is scheduled to run until midnight.

Separately, a flood warning was issued for much of southwestern Clinton County and some of east central Franklin County, including Vermontville. This warning is set to expire at 7:15 p.m. tonight.

Essex County EMS Coordinator Matthew Watts said Friday afternoon that the area is “in good shape, flooding-wise.” He mentioned that the county was dealing with a few downed trees and power lines and that heavy rain may persist in pockets. However, he noted, Essex County is on the “downhill side” of the storm and no high winds are forecasted.

Franklin County officials could not be reached by press time Friday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brooke Taber notes the difference between a flood watch and a warning is that flood watches are issued when conditions are right for flooding. Warnings are when flooding is “ongoing or expected to begin shortly.”

If caught in a flood, the National Weather Service advises people to seek high ground and never attempt to cross flood waters.
