Abortion doc ‘Vessel’ to be screened
SARANAC LAKE — Adirondack Voters for Change will host a screening of the documentary “Vessel” on Thursday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at BluSeed Studios, 24 Cedar St.
A discussion will follow the screening. Refreshments will be provided. A recommended donation of $10 will be accepted at the door. Net profits will be donated to Women on Waves. The film contains mature subject matter.
The one-hour, 23-minute film begins in 2000 and follows Dr. Roberta Gomperts’ evolving journey to prevent unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Gomperts founded Women on Waves to provide sexual health services, including early medical abortions (abortions with pills) on board a Dutch ship outside the territorial waters of countries where abortion is not legal or heavily restricted.
Viewers meet Gomperts as she prepares the Dutch ship to help women in international waters off the coast of Ireland. This experience and others fraught with political and physical obstacles require Gomperts to rethink her approach. During a 13-year span, Women on Waves expands to help women access information about medical abortion. They distribute information through the internet, grassroots efforts on the ground, and by supporting the creation of safe abortion telephone hotlines in collaboration with partner organizations across South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. These services continue to date.
“Vessel” premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2014, winning the Audience Award for Documentary Feature and a Special Jury Award for Political Courage. The film has received numerous awards since.
Margot Gold, Adirondack Voters for Change’s Abortion Access Committee co-chair, said, “The film not only informs the viewer about Gomperts’ journey to provide abortion health care in parts of the world where abortion is illegal; it also empowers viewers to believe in themselves and our power to make change in areas we are passionate about, whether political, professional, or personal.”
