New theater camp coming to Tupper Lake
TUPPER LAKE — A new summer camp for teens is coming to this community: Camp Crossroads.
Under the direction of long-time music professionals Elizabeth Cordes, Kendall Davison and Danielle LaMere, participants will work through the month of July to produce a fully-staged production of “Anastasia the Musical: Youth Edition.”
Camp Crossroads was started with the goal of connecting like-minded artistic individuals across the North Country, as well as summer residents. Often thought of as the “Crossroads of the Adirondacks,” Tupper Lake was the perfect place to start a musical theater camp that seeks to introduce young artists to those outside of their immediate community. Cordes, Davison and LaMere all have history working with other local summer theater camps, and have firsthand seen how beneficial experiences like this can be for underserved teens in rural areas.
Camp Crossroads is among the first productions of the new 60-minute adaptation of “Anastasia the Musical: Youth Edition” from the critically-acclaimed Broadway musical “Anastasia,” created by Tony winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.
It is a show that transports its audience from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing con man and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.
Rehearsals will be held at the Tupper Lake Middle-High School Auditorium Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning July 5 and ending July 28. To show off their month of hard work, public performances will be held on July 28, 29, and 30 at the TLMHS auditorium and Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake.
Registration is open through June 3, with auditions to follow on June 10; students who wish to audition must first register online. Video auditions will be accepted until June 9.
Camp Crossroads is made possible by Tupper Arts, the Tupper Lake Central School District, the John M. Glover Agency, and Joe and Rena Sellin. For registration links, calendar, and more information, visit campcrossroadstl.org.
