Five local track athletes take on states

Five Tri-Lakes track and field athletes competed in the NYSPHSAA track and field championships this past Friday and Saturday at Middletown High School.
Saranac Lake was represented by seniors Jake Kollmer, Liam Nobles and Dustin Burke, as all three athletes took part in two events. Leila Fey, a seventh grader, competed for Lake Placid in two girls events, while Tupper Lake’s Cohen Gerstenberger, a junior, raced in one. All three schools compete in Class C.
Kollmer kicked off the state meet by placing sixth in his class in the 800-meter in a time of 1 minute, 56.51 seconds. Maple Grove’s Ethan Verbosky (1:52.60) was the winner in Class C.
Kollmer rounded out the state meet with another sixth-place finish in the Class C 1,600-meter in a time of 4:21.45. Verbosky (4:15.62) also won the Class 1,600.
On the throwing side, Burke also recorded a sixth-place effort for the Red Storm with a toss of 47 feet, 11.5 inches in the boys Class C shot put. Tri-Valley’s Kane Poje won the event with a toss of 52-11.25. Burke then finished eighth in the discus event with a throw of 137 feet, while Sidney’s Michael Morrissey (158-09) won.
In his third and final trip to the outdoor state meet, Nobles placed 14th in the boys Class C long jump with a leap of 19-04. Aiden Bryant of Midlakes was the overall winner with a jump of 23-07. In the triple jump, Nobles fouled on his attempts. Bryant also won that event.
The Lumberjacks’ lone track athlete, Gerstenberger, placed 17th in the Class C boys 400-meter event in 53.44, while Tully’s Ryan Rauber (47.44) won the event.
On the girls side, Fey placed 13th in the Class C 1,500-meter race in a time of 4:59.22. Cooperstown’s Annelise Jensen won the Class C race in 4:34.22. In the 3,000-meter race, Fey placed 12th in Class C in 10:44.03. Hastings’ Caitlin Thomas (9:29.08) won the Class C race.
